A Guide to Healthy Living in Aberdeen with Skene House

Be it a New Year’s resolution or an ongoing lifestyle choice, finding ways to stay healthy when you visit a new city can be challenging. It’s too easy to eat out on rich foods or relax in your hotel room claiming you don’t know where the nearest gym is, or where you can source healthy meals.

At Skene House Apartment Hotels we want to help our guests maintain a healthy lifestyle. Aberdeen boasts a mix of extensive parks for a breath of fresh air, a walk, a run or a work out. The old railway track from Aberdeen city stretches 41 miles all the way out to Ballater: called The Deeside Way it’s excellent for cyclists, joggers and families. Aberdeen Beach is ideal for a brisk walk or blustery jog, and the city’s Park Run meets at the Beach Esplanade every Saturday at 9.30am for five kilometres of exercise with unbeatable sea views. Within roughly half an hour’s drive of the city you can be climbing Bennachie near Inverurie, or ascending Scolty Hill in Banchory, taking in the sweeping Aberdeenshire scenery.

For guests who prefer to hit the gym then all the Skene properties work in partnership with Nuffield Health to offer our guests gym access. If you’re already a member we can point you in the right direction, and for non-members we offer a ‘Gym and Swim’ day pass and simply add the cost directly onto your bill. Skene House Holburn is literally across the road from Nuffield Health so there are no excuses about getting there! With swimming pool, sauna, steam room and jacuzzi there’s the chance to wind down after attending a class or using the extensive gym facilities.

Forgetting your kit is not an excuse. Run 4 It, a specialist running shop, is across the road from Skene House Holburn. Skene House Rosemount is near shops like John Lewis for swimwear, yoga and sportswear, and in New Look it’s possible to buy sports kit at very reasonable prices. If dance is more your thing then Skene House Whitehall is within walking distance of Dance Fit on Rosemount Place for dance attire and accessories.

Each Skene House apartment has a fully fitted kitchen so it’s possible to cook up low calorie, healthy, nutritious meals every evening. Reception staff will point you in the direction of the nearest supermarkets but there are a range of specialist health shops in the city. Nature’s Larder on Holburn Street is a few feet from Skene House Holburn, and Holland and Barrett is within walking distance of Skene House Rosemount.

Eating out with a healthy lifestyle in mind is easy if you know where to go. Foodstory Cafe on Thistle Street, near Skene House Holburn, prepares a mix of salads rich in flavour and full of interesting ingredients, as well as soups and (vegetarian) sausage rolls. Yorokobi by CJ is roughly equidistant between all the Skene House properties and serves excellent sushi. Or for delicate seafood Bistro Verde on the Green and The Silver Darling at Aberdeen harbour are both renowned.

Within each Skene House property guests can help themselves to complimentary fruit teas, green teas, red bush tea and decaffeinated coffee to assist any detox or clean living. Each guest enjoys a complimentary buffet breakfast when they book directly with us by phone or online: this sets people up for the day and helps avoid snacking. And if you’re really keen to max out the exercise then book a top floor apartment and take the stairs. Every little helps. Here’s to a healthy 2017.

Great for families too as each apartment has its own living room and kitchen, so a chance for parents to have some adult time once the children are tucked up in bed.

Thanks for saying so. Aberdeen’s well served with flights, trains, sleepers etc. but it’s got to be viable for you. If it’s ever is closer, or just feels closer, you know you’re welcome.
