A New Year is a time of new beginnings, Spring is a time of birth, and the arrival of a baby is such a moment of celebration and impact. It changes everything!
For close relatives, seeing and holding the wee bundle is a huge priority, and at Skene House we’ve noticed that we often host grandparents, and enthusiastic aunties and uncles, all desperate to meet the new arrival. It makes its own sense. The mother is often recovering from major surgery, or trying to feed the baby night and day, both parents are getting to grips with the sleepless nights, and in many cases the spare room is now … a nursery!
Whilst some new parents love to have people staying with them, others simply need a bit more space. Skene House works for visiting relatives as it’s a home from home. Our one, two or three bedroom suites each come with their own living room and kitchen. This means that relatives can host their family and the new baby with ease, welcome your daughter/daughter-in-law and the infant in the living room, make a cup of tea, even prepare them lunch in the kitchen – so that’s one less thing for a tired parent to think about. Store snacks or treats in the fridge for older grandchildren, perhaps even have a celebratory bottle of champagne chilling in anticipation of the big event. Creating such a homely atmosphere isn’t as easily achievable in a traditional hotel room.
We also pride ourselves on being distinctly family friendly: cots with linen, high chairs, bed guards, bottle warmers, potties, baths, plastic baby crockery, toilet seats and toilet steps can be requested free of charge. It may be worth booking an extra bedroom for an older sibling to spend some nights with granny and grandad. Or a tired mum can doze for an hour as the relatives take charge of the new baby to give her a break! Another option is to meet briefly in the Skene House guest lounge, bring the buggy in, perhaps enjoy a complimentary tea or coffee, before heading off for a walk together. We’ve frequently seen relatives take the pressure off new parents by using the facilities at Skene House as thoughtfully as possible.
Once the mini guest of honour has headed home it’s possible, with a fully furnished kitchen, to whip up casseroles, lasagnes and meals to bring to your loved ones the next day, or simply chill out for the evening until the babysitting and general ‘helping out’ duties resume.
Skene House has three wonderfully central properties to choose between, all within walking distance of the railway and bus station, and a short taxi ride from the airport. Rosemount and Holburn welcome guests for anything from one night onwards. For those relatives who require to help out or visit for longer our Whitehall property specialises in longer stays of one week or more. Whitehall has generous gardens for a city centre property, ideal for little legs to run around, and the toy box in the lounge is another attraction for younger visitors. We’re also in close proximity to an array of shops selling delightful gifts or practical essentials for newborns, such as Teasel and Tweed (across the road from Skene House Rosemount), Boots, John Lewis and Jojo Maman Bébe in the Bon Accord Centre, Mamas and Papas in Union Square, and dependable Mothercare (a short drive away in Berryden).
Another draw is Skene House’s free city centre parking. No parent wants to drive around looking for a parking spot with a crying baby in the backseat, or waste precious nap-time seeking out a car park. The weight of modern carseats also means that everyone wishes to keep distances to a minimum. Our car parks also make life easier for visitors to Aberdeen, who don’t know the city well, and don’t want any hassle.
Our receptions are manned 24/7, which means that if guests are called away urgently (perhaps that all important phone call from the hospital) our staff can book you a taxi or assist you at any time of day or night. It also means that people can visit you at any time, or drop off older siblings as the contractions start, and there will always be a friendly face to welcome them, even at four in the morning!
As a family business, owned and run by the Skenes for over forty years, family is at the heart of what we do. So if you’re excited relatives, or expectant parents and perhaps looking for somewhere for your loved ones to stay, we’d love to be part of your story.
