Speaking to your best mates on the phone is quality, but getting the girls together for a cocktail night and a weekend away is priceless. Away from work, partners, and the pitter patter of little (and teenage) feet, escaping for a laugh, a catch up and some indulgence with your girlfriends is always a valid excuse for a city break. With our local knowledge we’ve rounded up the best places to stay, eat and play in Aberdeen. And if you’ve never visited the Granite City before perhaps consider trying something a little different.
WHERE TO STAY – The whole point of going away together is being together, rather than in separate hotel rooms on different floors. Often getting ready for a night out can be the highlight of the evening. At Skene House we provide serviced apartment hotels so you can get ready together. ‘Serviced’ apartments means that you don’t have to clean them- you’re on holiday after all. With one, two or three bedroom apartments on offer, with a shared kitchen and living room, it’s possible to have a great catch up. Sharing an apartment can be an economical way to pay self-catering prices with many of the benefits of a hotel, especially if you share bedrooms. And with your own kitchen you can rustle up snacks, stick to any dietary requirements and keep any fizz or vino chilled as required.
We also appreciate how many busy women value their sleep! A lie in is often a key part of the agenda when getting away from home. At Skene House it’s possible to share an apartment with your mates but also have the privacy of your own bedroom with no-one to disturb you in the morning. Book breakfast with us to ensure that you don’t have to lift a finger.
Skene House has two central short stay locations, Holburn and Rosemount, so ideal for meeting off the train or bus. And if you’re driving we offer guests free ample parking onsite so you don’t have to worry about the car. Our receptions are manned 24 hours, so there’s always someone to meet you when you arrive, whatever time of day and night.
And if you can only get away for one night we offer our serviced apartments with no minimum stays, so you’re welcome in Aberdeen as long as you like. Now here’s where to go.
WHERE TO DRINK
Straight Off the Train – Why waste time? Moments with your mates are precious. And if you’re partial to a G&T then the new Craftsman Bar on Guild Street is calling your name. Home to North East gins such as Teasmith and Porter’s it’ll give you a flavour of Aberdeen and shire. But if breweries tempt you more than distilleries there’s a range of craft beers on offer, along with wine and soft drinks.
Shopping and a Cocktail – Revolucion de Cuba is found within the Academy shopping centre, which is also very close to the Saint Nicholas Centre and the Bon Accord Shopping Centre. Shopping is thirsty work so it’s handy to have a cocktail stop nearby. With names like Mexican Firecracker and Carnival Cooler this cocktail menu adds colour and holiday vibes to a weekend away.
Fizz – If you desire pure unadulterated bubbles then book a table at Eclectic Fizz. With a range of prosecco and champagne gracing the menu you can celebrate as much as you like. They also run Cocktail Masterclasses if you fancy making your own concoctions.
Cocktail Bars – Aberdeen has a lot of cocktail bars to choose between. Other popular destinations include the Tippling House on Belmont Street, Dusk and Orchid both on Langstane Place, Soul Bar on Union Street and Bar 99 on Back Wynd. All are within walking distance of Skene House Rosemount and Holburn, but grab a cab back if you’re feeling indulgent.
Bars – If your pals simply aren’t into the cocktail scene, you just fancy a catch up in an unassuming, welcoming bar, then try Under the Hammer on North Silver Street, or No.10 on Queen’s Terrace.
THE MORNING AFTER – After a night of indulgence and a restful stay at Skene House drop by Bonobo Cafe, close to Skene House Rosemount. Known for its vegan menu, highlights include Bonobo’s Coconut Milk Lattes, Peanut Satay Wraps and their fantastic range of brownies.
