Our Aberdeen Neighbours

Each of the Skene House properties is set in a fantastic location and in great neighbourhoods. Whilst being in the centre of Aberdeen, only a short walk from the railway and bus station, each Skene House has a warm, residential vibe to it. Part of our success story is that we’re the antithesis of a homogenous chain brand, we offer exemplary service and we’re part of the local neighbourhood and fabric of Aberdeen. Our neighbours are also part of the story; they make each area tempting and inviting, so in this post we’ll be celebrating the boys and girls next door.

Set in the West End of Aberdeen, Skene House Holburn offers up the chic as well as the cheerful. Thistle Street is known for its range of independent shops and boutiques. Lovely little clothing shops, such as Hamish Munro, Bellino, Frox and Esslemonts pepper the street, macarons and one of the best afternoon teas in the city can be found at Almondine, vegetarian and vegan delights are dished up within Foodstory, and with its monthly food market, where local producers and farmers proudly sell their wares, Thistle Street is a spirited retail experience. Literally across the road from Skene House Holburn is our partner gym Nuffield Health, with swimming pool, sauna, steam room and jacuzzi, as well as a range of classes and equipment, so guests can indulge or work out as much as they desire. Brides to be, on wedding shopping trips, make an appointment at Perfect Bridal, where mothers of bride have their own dedicated shop. We also love the food offering on our doorstep. Maggie’s Grill is finger licking good for any meat-eaters out there, cheesy works of wonder are oozing out of Melt (recently visited by Donald Sutherland), Bev’s Bistro satisfies those with gluten free requirements, the Ashvale’s fish and chips cannot be argued with, and Montmartre offers a certain je ne sais quoi. And dip down Justice Mill Lane for cocktail delights, served up in Dusk, Orchid and the Boozy Cow. Holburn is a buzzing, vibrant neighbourhood for anyone wishing to discover Aberdeen’s West End.

In Rosemount we have some BIG, friendly neighbours. The regal, His Majesty’s Theatre, debuts the best shows in town, and Aberdeen’s Art Gallery is due to reopen in 2018 after an extensive refurbishment so we’ll be excited to see our neighbour’s new look. For BIG shopping experiences the Bon Accord Centre, St Nicholas Centre and Academy Shopping Centre are ten minutes walk away, meanwhile the Trinity Centre and Union Square Shopping Centre are only a few minutes further. Comic book fans can dip into Plan 9 for the fantastic and the creative. For authentic food experiences Carmine’s dishes up platters of traditional Italian, Nargile is a Turkish wonder, the Breadmaker bakes artisan treats which Skene House has been purchasing for our guests’ breakfast for many years, for ice-cream indulge in Crolla’s Gelateria at the end of our street, or nip across the road to Teasel and Tweed for coffee and cake. Rosemount is an ideal neighbourhood for shopping trips, theatre trips or girls and lads weekends: we’re talking shopping and a show, fashion and food, or comics and creativity. Ideal for those wishing to truly be at the heart of things.

Skene House Whitehall offers for longer stays of seven nights or more, and extended stays for those on projects or relocating to Aberdeen. In many ways, it’s situated in the the most residential area, extremely central but quietly surrounded by flats and amenities, so visitors can live like a local. We adore the new coffee and cake shop across the road: the Cult of Coffee is very chilled and does a good brew. Bonobo’s vegan offering on Skene Street is delicious; and on crisp, sunny days, or warm summer days, its roof garden is the place to be. But we also love being so close to the Rosemount area with its host of independent shops. Fishmongers, cheesemongers, Cloudy Blue Gift Shop, Peapod Vintage emporium, it’s such a nice district for a browse. And before you know it, stroll a little further and you’ve reached the scenic Victoria Park. There is also a host of barbers and beauticians in this area, if our guests wish to treat themselves. Skene House Whitehall truly is a home from home.

Family owned and managed since 1979, Skene House offers the spaciousness of an apartment with it’s own furnished kitchen, sitting room and one, two or three bedrooms, combined with the luxury and security of hotel services. Each Skene House is within walking distance of small supermarkets and food specialists, bars, restaurants, cafes and shops, so our visitors can experience the Granite City authentically. And with our free city centre parking, if you do desire to leave the neighbourhood, the open road beckons. From business to leisure, discover the Skene House way of life.
