Celebrating Nuart Street Art Festival Aberdeen – Skene House has been operating in Aberdeen for over forty years, and one of our favourite festivals is the fresh and vibrant Nuart street art and graffiti festival. Last year we took part, offering up a wall of our portfolio to be recreated, and we were delighted with the result. It’s a huge talking point.
It’s a shame that the 2020 festival can’t go ahead, but we can still take some time to celebrate the art Nuart has brought to our city.
Nuart is a very cool, street art project. It originated in Stavanger, Norway, and Aberdeen is the only international partner.
Once a year blank walls and spaces around the city are given a complete makeover, transformed by international street artists into something new, challenging and engaging. Nuart leaves a permanent legacy within the city, creating a cultural buzz and encouraging walking tours linking the artworks together.
Skene House Rosemount and its neighbours now boast a world class piece of public art by Anders Gjennestad (aka Strøk). Born in Norway, and living in Berlin, Strøk is a renowned stencil artist who creates photorealistic images of characters who appear to defy gravity. The wall now features flying, falling figures, tumbling through time and space. You have to see it to believe it. Do let us know what you think – we’d love to see your pictures on Facebook, Twitter or Instagram, simply tag us and we’ll take a peak.
Bear in mind that Skene House/Denburn is just one of many Nuart artworks peppered around the city. Nuart Aberdeen is globally and critically acclaimed, and it’s reignited a sense of civic pride in Aberdeen. Last year 13 international artists flew in to Aberdeen, to reimagine our blank canvas walls. Take a look at some of the highlights from another great festival.
If you want to get more in-depth then, usually, it’s possible to join an expert Nuart Guide for a Walking Tour. The tours take in new pieces, as well as hidden art treasures, well known works from previous Nuart editions, and talking points. Tours depart from The Green taking a route of approximately 1 mile, lasting around 90 minutes, and will run run rain or shine.
When lockdown passes, and we begin to resume travel, please take time to walk the streets of the Granite City and take in all Nuart has created. We’d love to welcome you to Skene House. In the meantime, enjoy the images from the comfort of your home.
