Or, if you’re the designated driver, then you don’t have to worry about getting parked after a busy day of sight-seeing.

In Aberdeen’s city centre is Porter’s Gin, named after a professor at the University of Aberdeen who sourced the team’s rotary evaporator, used to cold distill the delicate botanicals. Created in the basement of Orchid Bar in Aberdeen, it’s possible to visit this innovative, wee micro-distillery downstairs. Over a 45 minute tour, learn about Porter’s modern distillation process, botanicals and flavour before tasting distillates from the still, and sampling a gin & tonic or a cocktail.

Design and distil your own bespoke gin or absinthe under the tutelage of a distiller at Lost Loch Distillery in Aboyne. Other gins to sample from the area include Teasmith, Esker, Still River, House of Elrick, Granite North and Indian Summer.
Brewdog is synonymous with Aberdeen and shire. The brand’s first bar opened in the Granite City, and still stands proud on the Gallowate. A second bar can be found on the Castlegate. But head out to Ellon to get a behind the scenes tour of the brewery, and its distillation of Lone Wolf Vodka and Gin. Meet up at DogTap, the Brewdog Tap Room, and from there the tour commences. Learn about the ‘punk’ approach to brewing and distilling. Tours, known as the DogWalk, take in the brewhouses, Lone Wolf distillery, the warehouse, packaging lines and an exploration through HQ. The DogWalk lasts approximately 90 mins with four tastings along the way.
Number 67 & 68 buses run regularly from Aberdeen city centre to Ellon Park & Ride, or it’s a 35 minute drive from the Skene House properties.
If you’d prefer to visit a small scale brewery, then nip up to Peterhead on the Buchan Coast to discover Brewtoon. Learn how they create small batch Craft Beer in their compact ten barrel microbrewery. Enjoy a beer or two, as guests are shown around the brewery and taught how to make hand-crafted beer. The one hour tour ends in the Café Bar where it’s time to taste Brewtoon’s headliner beers and compare tasting notes with the bar staff.
Catch the 60 or 63 bus to Peterhead, or it’s a 55 minute drive from the Skene House properties.
If whisky is more your vibe then head in the direction of Oldmeldrum. This small town is known as the grain store of Aberdeenshire, so an ideal spot for a distillery to flourish. The hour long tour talks guests through the simple, time-honoured process of whisky production, celebrates the Manson brothers who founded Glen Garioch and includes a dram of the Founders’ Reserve. A longer 1.5 hour tour takes in the Warehouse Viewing Gallery, and the tasting features three Highland Single Malt whiskies.
Catch the 37 bus to Oldmeldrum, or it’s a 40 minute drive from the Skene House properties.
Neighbouring Balmoral Castle, Royal Lochnagar was once visited by Queen Victoria herself, accompanied by Prince Albert and their three eldest children. Visiting this distillery takes guests into the heart of Royal Deeside, rich in scenery and regal history. Six tours are on offer, including a Distillery Tour, a Tasting Tour, a Warehouse Experience, Dram at the Dam, a Royalty Tour and the Meet the Manager Tour. Prices vary from £8.50 to £150.00, so there’s something to suit most pockets.
Hop on the 201 bus, or it’s a 1 hr 15 minute drive from the Skene House properties.
Other distilleries to consider include GlenDronach Distillery in Forgue, or try a dram from Ardmore Distillery based in Huntly.
